Things To Do With Kids During Social Distancing

If you’re like me, you need things to do with kids during social distancing. I’m not a creative, artsy, school teacher kind of mom so I need all the help I can get on things to do. Check out my list and links below for activities, ideas, and resources.

  1. Let them cook a meal for the family
  2. Use those cardboard boxes to make forts
  3. Handwrite letters or cards to mail to family members, military troops overseas, children’s hospitals, or retirement homes
  4. Go for a bike ride, hike, or walk on one of many Utah trails.
  5. Pull out the Legos and have building events. You can assign different tasks each day of things to build in order to help with ideas or have multiple children compete against each other.
  6. Have them connect virtually with friends using FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, or any of the other apps available.
  7. Teach your pet(s) a new trick.
  8. Pull out the good, old fashion board games to play as a family.
  9. Have a “dance party” inside and just be silly to let everything go.
  10. Do some gardening or yard clean-up.
  11. Build a Rube Goldberg machine
  12. Draw and color a visual journal of what they see, feel, or think about during the day of Coronavirus social distancing.
  13. 12 Museums to Visit Virtually
  14. DIY Craft Ideas can be found here from someone much more creative than me, including a cardboard dome similar to what I mentioned in number two.
  15. Clean out a little from their closet and drawers each day so they have stuff to donate. I had my son pick 5 items of clothes per day until everything was gone that wouldn’t fit or he wouldn’t wear.
  16. Sidewalk or driveway art with chalk
  17. Go for a walk and let them take pictures of what they want. See your kids world and what’s important to them from their eyes.
  18. Do a puzzle.
  19. Start a Coronavirus Social Distancing Journal that they write in about this experience. When they’re 30 years old, they may enjoy reading what they went through as a kid.
  20. Color or Paint.

Things for Adults To Do During Social Distancing:

Let’s be real, you may want to do some of the things on my kid list. But below is a list of things to do as an adult that are different from my list of things to do with kids.

  1. Workout – since most gyms in Utah are currently closed and aren’t taking out your monthly dues use that money towards an online streaming service.
  2. Go for a walk and just listen to nature around you. No headphones, no phone…just quiet time to clear your mind.
  3. Start a new series to watch.
  4. Read a non-fiction book.
  5. Find new recipes.
  6. Challenge your brain with crossword puzzles, suduko, or word search.
  7. Reach out to someone that you don’t normally talk to daily and just see how they’re doing.
  8. Look at helping out your community once social distancing is over. I had been volunteering at the Humane Society before all this went down and it was one of the most gratifying things I’ve done in a long time. I can’t wait to get back!
  9. Plan somewhere to go and support the Utah economy when social distancing is over. Some things on my list that I’ve never visited – Salt Flats and Bryce Canyon.
  10. De-clutter your living space.
  11. Clean out your inbox.
  12. Clean up your camera roll on your phone and/or computer.
  13. Give yourself permission to relax.
